Error 868 when connecting to the Internet and VPN from Beeline and more

Hi all! Today at home I encountered error 868 when connecting to the Internet. As it turned out, the error occurs when the computer is unable to contact the remote VPN server. A similar connection is available when using L2TP or PPTP connection type. It is very often used by the Beeline operator, Ufanet, TTK and other Internet providers. Additionally, you may also see a warning message:

"The remote connection could not be established because the remote access server name could not be resolved."

The essence of the problem is that your computer cannot connect to the provider's remote server. It doesn’t matter what operating system you have: Windows 7, 8, 10 or even XP. First of all, check the cable that goes to the computer - it should fit tightly into the port.

If you are using a router, go to it and reboot it by pressing the power button or unplugging the cord from the outlet. Before turning it back on, wait a couple of minutes for the device to cool down a little - in the summer, the router may overheat. Also check that all cables that are connected to the Internet center are tightly connected to the correct outputs.

In Windows, right-click on the connection in the tray and then select the “Problem Diagnosis” section - the system will try to solve the problem itself. Restart your computer or laptop that you are using.

If error 868 persists when connecting to the Beeline Internet or another operator that uses VPN, then proceed to the steps described below.

SPECIALIST HELP! If you have any questions, you can always contact me in the comments.

Error 868 occurs because the DNS server specified is incorrect.

This often happens when, on a local network connection that faces the provider, the TCP/IP Internet protocol settings contain an incorrect DNS server address, or it is not registered at all and the values are empty. Then, when Windows tries to connect, it cannot connect to the VPN server, since it cannot convert the server hostname into an IP address and therefore displays Error 868. The solution is as follows: Press the Win+R key combination and in the open line write the command ncpa.cpl

:

Click the OK button and go to the “Network Connections” of the computer. Select “Local Area Connection” through which you are connected to the provider. Right-click on it and select Properties from the context menu. The Local Area Connections properties window opens. In the list of components, select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)”:

In the vast majority of cases, the provider’s network has a DHCP server that will help you obtain an IP address, so make sure that the “Use IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically” checkboxes are checked:

Click OK and check the connection.

Causes

Connection error 868 appears regardless of the type of operating system installed. The essence of the error is that the portable device cannot determine the address of the VPN server - the system that accepts the connection when using the Internet.

This server, through the central office, views information about branches. In the case of a home network, the main office is the provider, and the branch office is the client. If it is impossible to determine the provider's IP address, it is impossible to connect to it.

Error 868 when connecting to the Beeline Internet appears as a result of the fact that the PC does not have information on the name of the server that needs to be accessed. Error 868 when connecting to a VPN can be resolved in several ways, which we will discuss below.

The error appears because the DNS client service is disabled.

The DNS Client service in Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 is enabled by default. But there are times when due to a system failure or as a result of a virus, this service is disabled. Then again the request will not be processed correctly and Windows will throw an error. Let's check if the DNS Client service is active. To do this, press the Win+R key combination and in the Open line write the command services.msc:

We get to the list of Windows system services. We look for the “DNS-client” service and look at its status.

It must be active and run automatically. If this is not the case, correct it and restart your computer.

Checking activity and correct connection

Now, before determining how to fix the problem, you need to check whether the system sees an active connection and the protocols used, in particular IPv4.

To check, from the Run menu (Win + R), launch the command line (cmd), where we enter ipconfig /all, after which the available connections and their parameters will be displayed on the screen. In the case of the Beeline operator, error 868 may appear in such a way that the current IP address will be incorrect. So pay attention: it should start with 10. If there is no such item at all, or the address looks like 169.254.XX, you should try to install official drivers for the network adapter or again check the tightness of the cables for the wired connection. Sometimes the problem may arise from the provider's side. However, most cases involve misconfigurations of the current IPv4 protocol, unless IPv6 is involved (which is unlikely).

The error appears because port 53 is blocked.

Another reason for Error 868 to appear is user paranoia. Undoubtedly, you need to monitor security on the Internet and it is better not to go online without a firewall. But for some users, the fear of hacking prevails over common sense and they begin to block everything, including DNS requests. Therefore, open the rules of your security system and check in them to see if port 53 of the TCP and UDP protocol is blocked. Do not look at the fact that the error says “Port is open”. This means that the system is ready for connection, but it does not go through. If your firewall is configured in such a way that it blocks absolutely everything except what is specified in the rules, create an allowing rule for port 53 of the TCP and UDP protocol:

Problems with the provider's equipment

If Beeline internet worked without problems a few hours ago, but now error 868 appears, it is likely that the reason should be looked for on the traffic provider’s server. Then there is nothing left to do but contact the operator’s technical support for help.

If administrators are aware of the problem, they will notify the subscriber about it. If not, they will give recommendations on how to fix the problem and diagnose the system from their side. In a situation where the error cannot be corrected, it is necessary to invite a specialist to your home.

Ways to solve the problem

Error 868 (Beeline, Internet, Windows 7) has several solutions. True, the diagnosis itself should show you which one you should use. First, you should determine whether there is physical damage to the cable that connects the device and the computer. Then it is worth checking whether the program that monitors and provides the service is installed correctly. After this, it is worth considering the settings of your computer that relate to the Internet, its connection and security. And depending on the errors found, begin personal intervention.

Don’t forget to call the help desk and check how things are going with the servers at the moment, since their technical work, reboot or update - all this is also a consequence of the fact that error 868 (Beeline) occurs. Now we come to the most interesting part, namely, an analysis of ways to solve this problem, depending on the classification of a technical or software failure.

Error 789 L2PT connection attempt failed

The solution to this error is related to the Windows Registry Editor. To open it, you need to call the command line (search for cmd in the search) and enter the regedit command.

To resolve error 789, you need to create a DWORD value equal to “2” with the name “ AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule." It allows the connection if the client and server are behind NAT.

The change will work after a reboot.

System Restore

If you have recently started to experience error 868 (Beeline, Internet, Windows 7), how to fix this problem? What caused it? If previously your program worked stably and did not produce problems, then the reason may be the removal of some software products that probably used the program. To solve this problem, you simply need to restore the system from the last point where the configuration was saved. To do this, go to the “Control Panel”, then use the “System and Security” menu, and then go to the “Backup and Restore” sub-item. This will allow you to find the last restore point and return the system to its previous state.

This procedure will not take much time, but it is guaranteed to restore the functionality of your device. However, it is worth remembering that if error 868 (“Beeline”) occurs from the very beginning, then in no case should you use this method. Since it is intended exclusively for the situation that arises after stable operation on the Internet using a Beeline modem.

Danger of viruses

Also error 868 (Beeline, Windows

may occur as a result of the negative impact of viruses on your system. Some malware is capable of stealing traffic or blocking access to the network, and providing these network protocols for free access to attackers. It is viruses that can cause any error and block access. To get rid of them, you need to have an anti-virus program; if you don’t have one, then just go to the website of any manufacturer of this product and download a trial version, which is guaranteed to get rid of unwanted programs.

I get error 868 (“Beeline”), how can I fix it? What recommendations will allow you to avoid the difficult, tedious process of diagnosing and personally correcting all errors? In fact, there is only one recommendation here, which concerns the help of specialists or people who are well versed in this problem. Yes, some contracts allow you to get the help of a specialist who will correct this unpleasant situation as quickly as possible. But you should first study your contract, since calling a specialist will sometimes require payment for his work. If you don’t want to spend money, then you can turn to friends, perhaps some of them have already decided, or use the help of “home craftsmen” who provide high-quality services and at the same time require a much smaller reward for this.

Diagnostic conclusions

If a Beeline connection error 868 occurs, recognizing it is not as difficult as finding a way to solve it. It arises on its own and warns the user that there are negative aspects of the process that interfere with the provision of the main service. To deal with this unpleasant situation, you need to properly diagnose your connection and software settings.

If everything is clear with the physical state of the device, then next we will look at the software settings, which are quite complex in terms of structure and may require some knowledge in the field of PC management. But don’t panic, because along with the information we will also describe instructions that will allow you to solve the problem. Therefore, you just need to be patient and carefully study every step of diagnosing and solving the situation. This is what will allow you to most accurately and correctly diagnose, and, accordingly, look for a solution to the problem.

Alternative sources of Internet access

Error 868 (Beeline) has caused a lot of problems for many, so think about whether it’s worth using this service at all? The modern world is designed in such a way that the Internet is now available even in the most decorated corners of cities and in any public place. Is it worth spending your money on buying this device when it cannot provide normal speed, and in terms of mobility you can already use Wi-Fi even in transport? It is always worth remembering about alternative options, which will allow you to avoid unnecessary costs and problems, because technology is moving forward, and this method of mobile communication will not surprise anyone, especially since even in simple mobile phones and tablets the Internet amazes with its communication quality and data processing speed.

Why does it occur

And now it’s worth talking about why error 868 (Beeline, Internet) occurs at home. In fact, there can be many reasons, and they do not always concern your computer, since it is worth considering possible problems with the servers of the representative who provides the services. And one thing worth considering is that this error completely prevents the ability to access the Internet. Actually, this is her only qualification, but you must diagnose the problems yourself. And, what’s most interesting, this situation mainly occurs among users who use modern operating systems. Regarding Windows XP and younger, no such problems were observed there, as Microsoft stated, they themselves do not know why this is happening, they promised to fix everything. And they did this, however, for users of licensed copies of Windows. As for those who save their savings, you will have to learn how to personally diagnose a problem that is not complicated at all.
