Cellular communications in Kazakhstan: overview of operators

Kazakhstan is a rapidly developing country that, like China, has begun to produce its own cheap but high-quality products. Therefore, there are more and more guests in this state. Constant communication with the Motherland is important for everyone, and roaming from Russian operators is a significant blow to the subscriber’s pocket. Therefore, mobile communications in Kazakhstan provide more favorable conditions for tourists, allowing them to save on communication. In total, there are three cellular operators in the country in 3G and 4G formats, and in some places 2G is still visible. These companies completely cover the entire country, and only in the most remote corners there may be problems with communication.

How to choose mobile Internet!? Let's figure it out together.

Mobile slavery was abolished, which led to a significant shift in positions in the mobile communications market. Tariffs change almost every day, 4G Internet is beginning to actively develop and operators are doing their best to retain their beloved subscribers. Despite the competition, tariffs still went up, and unlimited Internet disappeared like a lilac fog.

Almost all operators today have begun to offer package tariffs with a permanent subscription fee. There are so many of them that you can easily get confused. We, together with the Yvision team, decided to do a small survey on the quality of communication and surveyed about 60 respondents on our own.

We asked only two questions: 1) What operator do you use? 2) Rate the quality of communication (good, satisfactory, bad).

As a result, the picture became more and more interesting, we dug for information and began to get confused in it ourselves. The best way to structure information is to segment it, simplify it for understanding and make infographics, which is what Maxim Pereguda @Loki did based on the collected data.

We have selected the 6 most popular stereotypical characters who, in one way or another, have a need for mobile Internet:

  • A businessman is an active person who uses a lot of both the Internet and mobile communications.
  • Hipster - uses traffic quite a lot, because you need to listen to music and chat a lot. Voice communication is used on average.
  • An Instagrammer , she talks a lot with her friends, on business or without, and also uses a lot of traffic. Browsing and downloading content.
  • A simple guy is an ordinary guy who clearly reminds you of one of your friends. He needs both traffic and conversations on average.
  • A student , she doesn’t speak much because she prefers the Internet to “voice”, because it’s more economical and also more mobile. And you can’t chat much in pairs.
  • A schoolchild has limited financial resources and can afford a minimum of traffic and a minimum of conversations.

In general, look at our cool infographics. We hope it was useful for you. If so, share it on social media. networks.

Note: almost all operators practice dividing traffic into day and night, so we provide a small list of distribution by tariffs used in the infographics.

Tele2

Cool - 8 GB of Internet traffic from 00:00 to 23:59 + 7 GB of Internet traffic from 00:00 to 09:00 free

Start - 1 GB of Internet traffic from 00:00 to 23:59 + 1 GB of Internet traffic from 00:00 to 09:00 for free. At night from 00:00 to 9:00, priority is given to the consumption of night 1 GB. When the volume of night Internet traffic is exhausted, consumption will be made from 1 GB provided for the day (from 00:00 to 23:59).

Beeline

All for 2300 - 10 GB of the package are available from 7:00 to 01:00 the next day, 20 GB - from 01:00 to 07:00 in the morning.

All for 1500 - 5 GB of the package are available from 7:00 to 01:00 the next day, 10 GB - from 01:00 to 07:00 in the morning.

Kcell

All tariffs - split traffic in half from 08:00 to 00:59 and from 01:00 to 07:59

Activ

Start - 5GB for 0 tenge from 06:00 to 00:59:59, 10GB for 0 tenge from 01:00 to 05:59:59

Boom - 10GB for 0 tenge from 06:00 to 00:59:59, 15GB for 0 tenge from 01:00 to 05:59:59

Altel

There is no traffic separation

Jet3G - what kind of “beast” is it?

Recently, in the turmoil of all this Kazakhstani 3G boom, another competitor was discovered in the field of high-speed mobile Internet access services - jet3G, provided by Altel. But note that this same jet3G is a CDMA EV-DO connection. And although in theory it belongs to 3G generation networks, so far in practice it turns out that the quality of communication is comparable only to EDGE, which belongs to the 2.75G transition generation networks. However, this does not mean that it is somehow worse or better than UMTS/HSDPA technology. This is essentially an analogue of it, but if the latter is deployed over the usual GSM networks, then the service provided by Altel is CDMA. Our telecom operator for this technology is an office whose name you have probably heard, and maybe even used - Dalacom (Pathword). (I remember it was once very fashionable to carry two mobile phones with you - one with the usual “Keycell” or “Beeline”, the second with this same “password”).

We will not consider the jet3g connection, for the very reason that we have never seen or touched it. However, after googling a bit and looking for reviews in the forums, I didn’t get the best opinion about this operator. Because although it is attractive in price, they say that the speed and quality of communication are very far from what was stated. Users say that some people have problems with the network coverage area, with very poor communication or its complete absence in the city center, where, according to the coverage map, there should be a reliable reception area, some with access speed, etc. Anyone can click on the link and go to the official website of this provider and find out for themselves what is there and how - study the tariff plans, the cost of equipment, the coverage map and other noteworthy nuances. Below we will only present for comparison and completeness the available data for this provider in a summary table. You can also mention, for example, the “flagship” of Kaznet - the cunning office Megaline, which recently also launched a mobile Internet service, but it seems that it is still in test mode and only for residents of Almaty.

Altel (by Kazakhtelecom)

Altel was the fourth operator and was controlled by Kazakhtelecom, a privatized incumbent operator. In 2021, Altel's days are over. In 2015 they agreed to merge with Tele2, and in 2016/7 both networks were merged. The new company is a joint venture between Tele2 and Kazakhtelecom, providing the best Tele2 coverage for Altel subscribers, and has a market share of about 20%. Altel is supported as a premium brand for contract subscribers within Tele2.

Internet for $20 per month

We also looked at the proposals we found from a different angle. What kind of internet can you get for $20 (approximately 7760 tenge ) per month? Of the 62 countries included in the study, 25 were not included on this list. These are, in particular, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, Chile, Italy, Portugal, the USA and South Africa - in these countries, unlimited connection via fiber optic costs more than $20 per month. Which mobile operator is more profitable in Kazakhstan?

Mobile operators in Kazakhstan provide sufficient amounts of data and services to their potential tourist clients. Most travelers only use mobile devices, so the services are tailored specifically to them.

When deciding which mobile communications in Kazakhstan will be beneficial for you, you should decide what is more important to you - calls and SMS or the Internet.

If you need everything at once, then you can choose either Tele2 or Beeline operators. They have sufficient volumes of services, so there is plenty to choose from. They also provide the Internet, which comes as an accompanying “product”.

When a client is more interested in the Internet, he can turn his attention to the Kcell company, which has a wide range of online packages that can be connected for a period of 1 to 90 days. Daily tariffs provide a small amount of MB for a relatively low fee. This option is convenient for those who occasionally use the Internet to communicate in instant messengers or view email and social networks. This is the only operator that provides the largest volume of traffic or unlimited traffic when you need a lot, a lot of Internet.

Which 3G USB modem to choose?

And we, having set all the priorities, will proceed to our mission - we will try to shed light on the dilemma about which 3G USB modem is better for a user to purchase in Astana, why, where and how much. It just so happened that the local author decided to get a 3g modem a few months before the launch of the technology and use the still available EDGE and GPRS, since these modems support previous communication standards. And the modem from Beeline then cost, for a minute, no more or less - 10,000 KZT (~$67). It was decided to take it, since for everyday life and talking on the phone I use the connection of this particular operator. I had already made a visit to the company’s office in order to purchase the necessary device, but alas, there were no modems in stock. As it turned out later, fortunately. Because this prompted me to find out what similar service Kcell could offer. Having weighed one thing against another, it was revealed that the Kcell usb modem costs 8,000 (~$53) tenge. Moreover, its traffic tariff plans were noticeably cheaper. And then, without hesitation, the author became the happy owner of a Kcell modem. I don't regret it.
