Features of the “Internet without Borders” tariff of the Kyivstar operator

Most of us are adults. We know that fairy tales exist only in books, films and children's fantasies. We also know where there is free cheese. But even adult uncles and aunts want to believe in these same fairy tales from time to time. One of these fairy tales was free Internet from Kyivstar in the new “Internet without Borders” tariff. Can you imagine free Internet? Miracles! Not otherwise.

A long time ago, trying to increase the loyalty of existing subscribers and attract the attention of new subscribers, the mobile operator Kyivstar announced its entry into the market of branded phones. And there were not simple phones, but smart ones. The first swallows were a trio with big names Aero, Terra, Aqua. But, as it happens, not all of them grew up to be beautiful and daring; Aero turned out to be a kind of Java background, while Terra and Aqua had the Android OS versions 2.2 and 2.3 installed, respectively. Everything would be fine, but something needs to attract the attention of buyers; the market is full of devices with a more attractive price/functionality ratio. And here the main feature appears on the scene - the new “Internet without Borders” tariff with unlimited access to the network for 1 hryvnia per day. And everyone gasped! No miracle! It can not be. Where's the catch? There is no catch, answered knowledgeable people, everything is honest and transparent, but under one small condition. This tariff is only for Kyivstar devices. This is how the operator made his devices unique.

Of course, as it turned out a little later, the unlimited Internet still has limitations. The first 50 MB of Internet access is carried out at maximum speed. All subsequent ones are limited to 64 kbit/s. If you think about it, 50 MB is not so little. Considering EDGE's maximum theoretical speed of 474 kbps (about 60 KB/s), it will take 835 seconds to download this volume. This is under ideal conditions; in reality, these values ​​are slightly different. Kyivstar is proud that their network speed is 130 kbit/s or 16.25 KB/s (one of the highest rates among all GSM operators in the world). Simple math allows you to calculate how long it will take to use up 50 MB (50,000 KB).

50000/16.25 = 3077 seconds or ~51 minutes

In reality, the speed was even higher. About twice. It took just over an hour to download the 123.2 MB file. Moreover, it took only 30 minutes to download the first 56 MB.

So, the results exceeded our expectations. Being in a “successful” zone, the Internet access speed using the EDGE protocol can exceed 300 kbps. Not a bad indicator!

And now, several centuries later, namely, on March 6, 2012, the operator decides to organize a sharing for all its subscribers, making the “Internet without Borders” tariff available not only with Kyivstar phones, but also on any other device. And again everyone groaned. How so, what is the point of buying branded terminals now? By going to the page with a description of the tariff on the operator’s website, you can familiarize yourself with all sorts of options for activation, deactivation and use of “Internet without Borders”. Everything, as usual, is clear and simple, and, as usual, a particularly sensitive place suggests that something is wrong here. Since many people, including colleagues, were interested in such a tasty tariff, I decided to find out why I should reactivate the service if I ran out of money. Why can’t I top up my account and continue using the Internet for 1 hryvnia? This is the only place, it seemed to us, where a catch could be hidden. I received the following response:

"Super! I’m switching to a new tariff,” said a colleague. Great, I thought! Finally something without having to hunt down the fine print. Although, having received such an answer, I had even more questions, especially regarding the termination of Internet access if there is money in the account! It’s funny, but if there is no money in your account, will you receive a message asking you to top up your account? In general, I have not yet received an answer to the new questions. I am waiting!

As it usually happens, over the weekend I took on a new device. This device turned out to be the Kyivstar Shine smartphone. One of the representatives of the second generation of smart people of the Kyivstar operator. To be honest, the speed of Shine is depressing. Perhaps this impression is formed after communicating with multi-core smartphones; besides, less demanding users will be more tolerant. In any case, the speed of operation does not in any way affect the actual speed of Internet access in the “Internet without Borders” tariff. Remembering all the necessary combinations and having previously downloaded the Speed ​​Test application, I got down to business. First, let's top up your account. Ten hryvnia should be enough, because in theory, for this amount I get 10 free days of Internet. Having set up my smartphone, I went to the settings menu to find out “my” number. So, everything is ready. The account has been replenished by 10 hryvnia. I dial *154# to find out the status. The service is not activated. I dial *154*1# and after a few minutes I receive a text message saying that my application has been accepted; to start the service, you need to restart your phone. After rebooting, the first thing I do is check my account. There are 8.94 UAH in the account. This means that the service has already been activated, but its full cost is not 1 hryvnia, but 1.06 hryvnia (contribution to the Pension Fund). No problem, I thought. Should be enough for testing. I turn off Wi-Fi and run Speed ​​Test. The results can be seen below.

Not bad! Now we launch the application, with the help of which we will test the “Internet without Borders” in action. The results exceeded all my expectations. After a few hours, I decided to re-run the Speed ​​Test to check the readings under restricted conditions. To my surprise, the download speed dropped by only two or three times, to 100 kbps, but the upload speed became 0 kbps. This means that using instant messengers is useless; you will not be able to send anything. There was nothing left to do but look at how the sites loaded. It took about 5 minutes to fully load www.itc.ua. As you understand, such an Internet will suit few people. This speed is acceptable for the CSD protocol, but not for GPRS, not to mention EDGE. But the downloaded file was 123 megabytes. And this is more than enough for most situations.

This would be the end of the fairy tale, but those who read it carefully will ask, where’s the catch? Yes, the speed drops, but within the acceptable limits it is more than decent. But the thing is that due to a coincidence of circumstances, namely, the absence of Internet for the second day at the provider whose services I use, I needed to launch Mireo Don't Panic. Since, due to the reason described above, it was not possible to use Wi-Fi Internet, I decided to do it on the Kyivstar smartphone, with its unlimited access to the Internet. Imagine my surprise when the application was unable to contact the server. And then I remembered how something similar happened with Kyivstar Spark. Then I didn’t attach much importance to the lack of Internet access, although I also topped up my account with 10 hryvnia. I forgot that in devices with which the “Internet without Borders” tariff debuted, you need to separately activate this service. However, suspecting something like this, I was convinced that the money was “eaten up” by Internet access at the “regular” rate. Okay, but what happened now? The day before yesterday I topped up my account and activated the “Internet without Borders” tariff. Where is the money? I'm calling the hotline. I outline the picture to the operator’s representative and wait for an explanation. A minute later, the girl tells me with joyful news where the money went from my account. Everything is simple to the point of banality. Before activation, an Internet session was opened on the smartphone. This session ended in about an hour, along with the end of the money in my account. And only after that, my number was switched to hryvnia Internet. That is, if I topped up my account not by 10 hryvnia, as for the test device, but by 25, 50, as subscribers usually do, this entire amount would be spent on the Internet based on the traditional tariff. What did I do wrong? I, a user who is well versed in mobile phones, knowing how power-hungry the Android operating system is, turned off Wi-Fi in my smartphone only after the message about the activation of a new tariff. However, the Internet session was not closed. And instead of 1 hryvnia per day, an amount many times greater than this figure was debited from the account. Strange, I thought. Why was 1.06 hryvnia withdrawn from the account if the Pension Fund fee is 7.5%, and what tariff was initially set for SIM cards sold with Kyivstar smartphones? There is only one way to get the answer. I call the hotline again. This time the communication takes place with a young man. Even though this is my second call, the operator calls me by name. If only Intertelecom could teach such a trick. No matter how much you call them, not only do you need to name in whose name the contract is concluded, you need to remember your number, and after that they finish off with the question: “How can I contact you?” Of course, it is quite possible to imagine that my friend decided to call them, doing me a favor, finding out this or that question for me. But Intertelecom’s finest hour has not yet arrived, so more about that later, but for now, let’s return to Kyivstar and the conversation with the operator’s representative. How did our fairy tale begin? Most of us are adults. So, like most of you, I always believed that the % of the number 100 is equal to the % itself. That is, having 1 hryvnia or 100 kopecks, 7.5% (contributions to the Pension Fund) is 7.5 kopecks, and since we don’t have half a kopeck, the figure is rounded to 8. I was wrong. They explained to me that 7.5% of 1 hryvnia is 5.6 kopecks, which is rounded up to 6 kopecks. The operator’s website states that 7.5% is deducted from the cost of the service excluding VAT. Even taking this factor into account, I can’t get 6 kopecks. Leaving higher mathematics to the conscience of the operator, let's move on to the issue of Internet tariffs. Word by word the following becomes known:

a) the activation request was sent at 15:47;

b) the service was activated at 15:51;

c) 8.94 hryvnia were debited from the account at 16:26;

d) Internet access before activation of the new tariff is 6.38 UAH/MB, including taxes.

Therefore, I clarify, before activating the service, the smartphone managed to pump out a little more than a megabyte of data. While I'm waiting for an answer, I mentally return to point "d". Why was the money for Internet access withdrawn half an hour after activating “Internet Without Borders”? This question perplexed not only me, but also the operator. Our conversation ended with my application, and the operator asking whether I wanted to leave it, accepted! A representative from the technical department will contact me to explain the reasons for what happened. The deadline for processing the application is March 17.

That's the end of the fairy tale. Now guess who the three-letter person is in this situation? What if I didn’t attach importance to the next withdrawal of money from my account, as happened with other operator SIM cards? What if the account had not 10, but 25, 50 hryvnia? And how many other different “what if” combinations...
